Is Breast Really Best?

For those of you that follow me on Twitter, you may have seen my slight panic tweet last night that I still have absolutely no idea whether I want to breast of bottle feed. I was overwhelmed with the amount of people giving me advice, and you pretty much all told me the same thing: to try breast feeding first and just see how I get on.

This will be my general plan, to try breast feeding while in the hospital where I can get plenty of advice from the midwives, and then see how I get on at home. But it really got me weighing up the pros and cons, and what would suit our family best. So I thought I would list them here as a bit of an exercise to myself, and to see if any of you have had the same dilemma!

Breast feeding
Pros:
  • it is obviously the best choice for your baby. It has so many benefits for your baby, such as protecting it from infections and diseases.
  • It’s free!
  • It’s the right temperature.
  • There’s no need to get up in the middle of the night to make a bottle; it’s there ‘on tap’.

I feel like the pros are easy, they make me want to breast feed, but it’s the cons that make it so much more difficult for me…

Cons:
  • What if I don’t like it?
  • What if I can’t get the baby to latch on?
  • Tom won’t be able to help with the feeds, which I know he really wants to do.
  • I know I won’t want to do it in public.

Bottle feeding
Pros:
  • Tom will be able to help with the feeds.
  • It will take the pressure off me if I can’t get the baby to latch on.
  • I will be able to see if it is getting enough milk.

Cons:
  • It isn’t as good for the baby.
  • It takes longer to make up the bottles.
  • It’s expensive.

These are all the things that have been running through my head recently, and I guess I won’t really be able to decide until baby J gets here. With all this to think about, it then leads me on to thinking so many other things, like:
  • What bottles are best to use if bottle feeding?
  • If I don’t like breast feeding, should I express?
  • If I do express, should I get a breast bump? Which is the best to get?
  • Would putting expressed milk into a bag to freeze or a bottle be better?

You can imagine how franticly my brain is working right now, so I really hope that when baby J arrives I know what I am doing, and that we can figure out what works best for us as a family.

If you have any advice, or know where I can get more information on any of this, I would really appreciate you letting me know!
